The Daily Southtown is reporting here that former Justice Mayor Melvin VanAllen was sentenced today to three years in prison after being convicted of multiple counts of concealing assets and a single count of making a false oath in his bankruptcy case. According to the article, "Prosecutors accused VanAllen of lying in his 2004 bankruptcy petition and hiding ownership of his home, bank accounts and auto parts business from the bankruptcy court and creditors. They said VanAllen hid more than $500,000 in bank deposits by breaking them into smaller deposits to avoid federal reporting rules."
