The U.S. House Judiciary Committee has formed a task force to investigate allegations of bankruptcy fraud and perjury against U.S. District Judge Thomas Porteous. According to The Times-Picayune (here), the move is the first congressional action on the subject since the Judicial Conference of the United States recommended in June that the House initiate impeachment proceedings against the judge.
Although the Justice Department has ended its five-year criminal probe, Judge Porteous could become the first federal judge to be impeached in 19 years. Citing "documents released last week by the Fifth Circuit," the Times-Picayune reports that the bankruptcy fraud allegations stem from Judge Porteous' 2001 bankruptcy case in which he allegedly failed to disclose gambling and credit card debts and a checking account.
